Waiheke Island
Our day at Waiheke Island in New Zealand. A beautiful ferry ride from Auckland landed us on the shores of Waiheke Island. We hopped aboard the electric bus to the quaint island town of Oneroa before walking a few miles along a pedestrian trail that borders vineyards and showcases views that seem too idyllic to be real.
After mile 2, I wished I had worn shorts instead of tight jeans, which now felt like what I imagined leather pants would feel like after running a marathon in them.
We arrived sweaty and thirsty at Mudbrick vineyards, and made ourselves comfortable. After some wine and dessert and a couple of hours soaking in the views and the ambience, we hired a taxi to take us on a personal island tour. Our driver’s license plate was fortuitous for a Wisconsin boy. It read simply: “RIDE WI” short for “Ride Waiheke Island”. It was another sign that we give significance to that which makes us feel at home, happy and at peace.
